Invasives springing up

5/27/2014

Garlic mustard season is underway!  ISN workbees in Manistee and Benzie counties saw great groups of dedicated volunteers helping protect natural areas AND enjoying delicious and nutritious garlic mustard lunches–minestrone, bean salad and garlic (mustard) bread.  You can still join us for the Grand Traverse County workbee on May 28 (4-7pm).
The cold weather (remember the snow storm on May 16?) has kept garlic mustard and other invasive plants very small compared to previous years.  Dame’s rocket, money plant, and even seedlings of woody invasives like Japanese barberry and invasive honeysuckles are also “ripe” for removal.  Keep an eye out as you head out to enjoy the nice weather as it comes!
